My whole life I have been living with my father since my mother had left us shortly after I was born. My dad went to school but he didn't learn to read or write he sat at his desk quietly and drew and coloured pictures because the teacher didn't have enough time for him and felt like he wasn't important. He only got to grade two and finished before the year was up. He worked on a farm 7 days a week from daylight to dark for $6 a day. My dad worked to take care of his 4 sisters and 3 brothers and parents. His dad worked in the woods whenever he found work so they moved around a lot.
Therefore not having schooling he couldn’t fill out job applications. So he would go to work in the woods where they don't ask for applications. plus a baby was a job and a half. Being a single father must be hard for one to handle. My whole life and still today my father and I are on welfare. I went to a small school with maybe 300 students from k-12. My aunt showed my dad to write his name. He would sign papers while pretending to read over the page even though he couldn't tell what he was really signing. While I was in school my dad decided it was time to learn to read to help me get through school. He was getting help from a wonderful lady named Dawn Watson.
Once I hit middle school I became smarter than him and he had a hard time handling the fact that he couldn’t help his only daughter. All he wanted was for me to get my education since he didn’t have the chance to. He told me to go to school for what I want to do in life and he will help me every step of the way. Now today my dad can read and write at a grade 5 level and I am so proud of him for doing all this for me. He wants to see me presume my dream and that’s what I plan to do, not only for me but for him! My dad is my hero xox
I love you dad
